"Consider this question: In the wake of a crisis it takes considerable effort to resume normal life as best possible. As our current economic crisis careens around Detroit, is resumption of life as it was before the current conditions the only possibility? For with every crisis, there is also the opportunity to radically restructure the ways in which we live.

Artworks/Detroit at CAID is looking for proposals that challenge our traditional ideas of what art & design can do to affect the economic present and future, and what creative fields can do to generate provocative responses to the question posed above."

"Liberate the horizontal. Integrate the vertical super-surface."
Pretty self explanatory.
See you in the branches.

International Tree Climbing Day is a project by the Duo Collective (Kayle Brandon and Heath Bunting). Formed in 2002, Duo produced a range of projects, in terms of duration, formality and resources. Some where short, messy and cheap, others where long, expensive and structured.

"As the SF Board of Supervisors prepares to vote on a law that would make it illegal to sit or lie on any sidewalk in the city, San Franciscans from all walks of life will respond by participating in a creative celebration of the city’s public space, culture, and tradition of compassion.

On Saturday, March 27, people in every neighborhood will be doing what they love on the city’s sidewalks and they will be inviting family, friends, and neighbors to join them."

"Passionate individuals and non-profit organizations from the region of Rennes, Brittany, France invite you to participate in the first Breizh Entropy Congress. This inter-disciplinary event focuses on free (as in freedom) creations and culture.

Through a meeting fostering open-mindedness, exchange of ideas and learning, we hope to show solutions to technical, social and political problems, and celebrate free, reclaimed and creative art and technology.

We happily welcome entropy, as a means to break artificial boundaries between disciplines and find unexpected ways of doing things that promote liberalization, sharing and reclaiming of technologies that traditionnally belonged to the realm of corporations and well-funded academic labs."

"Nepotists, opportunists, friends, freaks and strangers intersecting in the grey zone is a project in which role defining, blurring and shifting intersect within and outside art. The mise-en-scène in Z33 becomes a mise-en-action, which addresses the presence, responsibility and potential actions of the artist, visitor or audience. In its form and structure, the grey zone challenges traditional presentation venues. The white or the black box becomes grey or coloured and is always changeable."

"Tired of your Social Network? Everyone should have the right to disconnect. Seamless connectivity and rich social experience offered by web2.0 companies are the very antithesis of human freedom. Users are entraped in a high resolution panoptic prison without walls, accessible from anywhere in the world.

Liberate your newbie friends with a Web2.0 suicide! This machine lets you delete all your energy sucking social-networking profiles, kill your fake virtual friends, and completely do away with your Web2.0 alterego.

Suicide Machine currently runs with Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and LinkedIn!"

Imagining cities beyond oil
Various
"Post-Oil Cities is a project created and directed by Lluís Sabadell Artiga within Híbrids 2.0 which investigates the relationship between human beings and their surroundings from an ecological point of view. In addition to POST-OIL CITIES, Híbrids 2.0 has open lines of research on Art and Ecology, Perception and Landscape and Architecture and Environment.

The project uses the capacity of visionary creativity to think, imagine and design our cities, regions and areas beyond oil (Post-Oil), generate a new imagination for the twenty-first century that will be a reference in the present."

"THE PUBLIC SCHOOL is a school with no curriculum. At the moment, it operates as follows: first, classes are proposed by the public (I want to learn this or I want to teach this); then, people have the opportunity to sign up for the classes (I also want to learn that); finally, when enough people have expressed interest, the school finds a teacher and offers the class to those who signed up.

THE PUBLIC SCHOOL is not accredited, it does not give out degrees, and it has no affiliation with the public school system. It is a framework that supports autodidactic activities, operating under the assumption that everything is in everything.

The Public School (Brussels) is set up by Komplot at Nadine, from November 2009 until April 2010 and later in other venues in the city. Telic Arts Exchange (Los Angeles) initiated The Public School, an art school “with no curriculum.” It now also exists in Philadelphia and Chicago with new schools opening this Autumn, in New York at Common Room, in Paris at Bétonsalon and in Brussels at Komplot."

In the light of Copenhagen
Belgium, Brussels
"A new United Nations climate conference will be taking place in Copenhagen in early December 2009. Its aim is to come up with a Copenhagen Protocol that will replace that of Kyoto. It would be no exaggeration to say the Copenhagen conference will be of historic significance even before it has taken place. After all, a good and wide-ranging protocol is essential if there is to be any chance of taking vigorous action against climate change. And there’s not much time to lose. The latest data all point to the accelerated warming of the planet.

Just before the UN conference, the Kaaitheater is holding the second Burning Ice encounter. We are once again inviting artists, philosophers, sociologists and politicians to formulate challenges for art in the light of the Copenhagen conference. The basic ingredients of Burning Ice 2 are the play Holland Tsunami by the Dutch theatre company SPACE and the performance Evaporated Landscapes by Mette Ingvartsen. Debates and talks will be held on the topics covered. The full programme will be announced in October."

The project intersects with recent public debate in Copenhagen about air pollution in the city. In collaboration with Senior Scientist Jørgen Brandt from The National Environmental Research Institute in Denmark a first prototype is developed for making an indicator that can be placed in the city and display local levels of pollution as well as pollution forecasts on individual streets. The project holds an open source script for displaying data from the Internet in a variety of forms.
